Looking for Redemption
The 2018 Sinquefield Cup was one of the most dramatic in the tournament's history and ended in a three-way tie between Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana and Levon Aronian. All three returned in 2019, seeking an outright win, not only looking to capitalize on the tournament's improved prize fund of $325,000, but for bragging rights and redemption from the year before.
But none of them prevailed. Ding Liren pulled out the win, narrowly beating out Magnus Carlsen in an exciting tie-break round to become the 2019 Sinquefield Cup tournament champion.
