2016 Your Next Move

Second Stop Leuven

The 2016 GCT tour continued only days later with the second stop at Leuven City Hall for the Your Next Move tournament. Boasting the largest University in the Benelux Union, the city is a rich piece of European history waiting to be discovered. Spectators saw six tournament participants compete against each other in 9 rounds of rapid chess and 18 rounds of blitz chess for a total prize fund of $150,000.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen started the final tournament day with a lead over the rest of the field and had no trouble taking the first place win and a $37,500 prize fund with three rounds to spare. As Carlsen did not play in the rest of the Tour, he was automatically disqualified from winning the entire tour, hence the other big battle of the tournament's last day was over the second place prize and Grand Chess Tour points. The race to second place was between American Wesley So and the Armenian Levon Aronian, who started and finished the day half a point apart. So's "don't lose any games" strategy seemed to pay off, as he bested the Armenian by half a point, collecting 10 Grand Chess Tour points and $30,000. Aronian was awarded 8 Grand Chess Tour points and $15,000 for his third place finish.
